Life Skills English - Students in this class receive one period of instruction daily in Life Skills – English/Reading. The students will gain skills in analysis of text, reading process, comprehension, communication and writing. Instruction is further individualized according to the IEP. Life Skills Math - Students in this class receive one period of instruction daily in Consumer Math. The students will be learning about all math related to earning money, buying food, shopping for clothes, managing a household, buying and maintaining a car, Home improvement, traveling, Budgeting, banking, and taxes. Instruction is further individualized according to the IEP. Life Skills Voc - Students will receive instruction focused on gaining skills necessary to obtain and keep a job as well as learn job skills to better equip the student for the work place. The PAES Lab serves the students in teaching over 300 different job skills to the students in this class. The areas of instruction range from Industrial Technology, Business/Marketing, Home and Consumer, and Manipulatary Processing and Production. We also have a School Based Enterprise in our class. “Welch’s Button Production” Where we are hired often by outside businesses to produce various buttons for their company or club. We use the profits from this business to purchase materials for the class as well as purchase our own supplies to produce Ashley Ridge Spirit buttons for sale here at Ashley Ridge and Various events. Life Skills Community Based - students will receive instruction in Community and Independent Daily Living essentials. Topics will vary from nutrition, safety with foods, cooking, personal hygiene, health practices, personal and occupational safety, Utilizing/understanding your community resources. The PAES Lab will be utilized in teaching some of these skills as well. Life Skills Rec/Leisure – This period is a wind down to our school day. During this period Students will have an opportunity to complete work from earlier periods, Participate in activities in the gym/track, Participate in group games that involve critical thinking and cooperation. This is also a transition period for many of our students that ride a Special Needs Bus that leaves earlier in the school day. Discussion Topics |
